  • Obituary: It is with a broken heart that I announce the loss of my dear husband, Aleck Ross Malaidack. Aleck passed away, surrounded by my love, in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre on March 20, 2025, the first day of spring. Aleck was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on August 14, 1948, to Helen (Ross) and George Malaidack. Aleck's family on his father's side were of Ukrainian decent. Aleck was very interested in his family history. His grandfather Andrew Malaidack and family fled the Ukraine in the early 1900's. He was an honoured immigration officer for 27 years at Pier 21 in Halifax as he spoke numerous languages. Aleck lost 2 of his uncles in WWII. Flight Sergeant Aleck Malaidack was in the Royal Canadian Airforce and died at 21 years of age. Private Stephan Malaidack was in The North Nova Scotia Highlanders and died at age 19. Aleck's mother and family grew up and lived in Milford Station, Stewiacke, Bible Hill, and Truro areas of Nova Scotia. Aleck grew up on Woodland Avenue in Dartmouth with many fond memories of his childhood and friends. At age sixteen, Aleck went to sea on an Imperial Oil tanker working in the kitchen as a steward. At age seventeen, Aleck worked as an orderly on the maximum-security unit at the Nova Scotia Hospital in Dartmouth. His career continued in 1973 working for the Department of Veterans Affairs as a Supervisor of Orderlies on evening shift at Camp Hill Hospital in Halifax. He attended Vocational School in 1983 to get his LPN certification. Aleck then excelled as an LPN at Camp Hill Hospital in medicine but mostly in psychiatry. He also drove taxi for a number of years on days off and after work hours. Our adventure began in 1988 in Halifax where we lived until July 2000. Aleck and I then moved into a mini home on a large double lot in the country on the Wallace River West Rd. Eventually, we built a new home and worked together building up the properties and gardens. He loved it there, working around the yard with his tractors, cutting wood and using his tools. Aleck was handy at many things. He enjoyed hunting and was skillful with dogs. He spent many hours with the "boys at the camp" next door - Miles, Wade, Chad, Les, Kyle, Neil, Daniel, Glenn, and Rob. Aleck had an amazing memory for detail. He had wit, curiosity and a quick sense of humor. He enjoyed politics, history, and seeking information on many practical things. He had that winning and magnetic personality that gave him social flair. He loved engaging with friends and people in general. He greatly valued his quiet time too. He enjoyed a good glass of wine and a Marguerita. In 2020, we moved into our Bible Hill townhome in the Riverwood 55+ Community. We continued to maintain our home in Wallace where Aleck spent most of his time because he loved the country. That home was sold in 2024. Aleck is survived by his loving wife Brigitte (Benoit, Radojewski), his stepson James (Her Hyun Jung) Benoit, and their children Brian, and Caitlyn. Aleck also has a brother, Mark Malaidack, who lives in Northwood Manor in Halifax. Aleck has many living cousins, nieces, and nephews in Nova Scotia and other areas of Canada. Aleck was predeceased by his father George Malaidack, his mother Helen (Ross) Nurnber, his sister Georgia (Gilbert) Gilroy, and many aunts and uncles. Special thanks to the amazing palliative care nursing staff, Dr Henderson and other doctors at the Truro hospital who provided exemplary care. Thanks also to all our many supportive friends. Donations in lieu of flowers to a charity of your choice. A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 29th from 2 \endash 4 PM in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St, Truro, NS.
