Notes

  • Obituary: Letha Anne (Matheson) Mowatt \endash 89, Bible Hill, formerly of Brookfield. We are saddened to announce that Letha Mowatt passed away peacefully at her home in Bible Hill on Saturday, April 5, 2025. She was born at home in Brookfield to the late Lawrence "Tom" and Florence (Carter) Matheson. Growing up on the farm as the fourth of ten children, Letha learned responsibility early through household jobs and barn chores. She attended various schools in her early childhood and graduated from the newly opened Brookfield Rural High School in 1953. She fulfilled her dreams of becoming a teacher when she graduated from the Provincial Normal College in Truro in 1954. She taught school in Spryfield, Calgary, and Brookfield, retiring in 1990 after specializing in Junior High Mathematics. At an early age, Letha was baptized at Knox United Church, Brookfield, and became a church member in her teens. She attended youth groups from Mission Band, CGIT, and YPU (Young People Union) and then later became an elder in Knox United. It was at church that Letha found her love of music. Her dedication to the church and her passion for music were demonstrated by her directing of choirs at all levels and by producing many musicals for the church and the community. As a teen, Letha loved to play sports and was skilled as a fastball player and played basketball for the school. As she grew older, her love of sports turned to the role of spectator. Whether it was cheering on the Elks in Brookfield, team Gushue at the Brier, or her beloved Raptors on TV, Letha loved to watch sporting events. She loved to travel to cold rinks, warm gyms, and even windy, rainy soccer and rugby fields to watch her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren pursue their passions. In 1958, Letha married Harry Mowatt and had two children, Yan and Melanie. The family expanded when Nancy (Allen) Hatfield moved in during her high school years. Living, working, and raising a family in Brookfield allowed Letha to embrace all aspects of life in her community. She lived close to many of her brothers and sisters and enjoyed watching her extended family grow around her. In 1968, Letha joined the newly formed United Church Women's Group (UCW) and has been an active member ever since. She was involved in leadership roles at the Presbytry and Maritime Conference levels. She also served as President of the Maritime Conference of the UCW. Letha is survived by her daughters, Yan Mowatt (Grant Campbell), Bible Hill; Melanie (Steven) Miller, Mount Denson; honorary daughter, Nancy (Allen) Hatfield, Bible Hill; sisters, Edna Graham, Brookfield; Wilma Avila, Kansas; brothers, John (Lynn) Matheson, Brookfield; Hugh (Judy) Matheson, Brookfield; Vaughn "Gab" (Donna) Matheson, Brookfield; sisters-in-law, Myrna Matheson and Ruth Matheson, both of Brookfield. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Verna and Donnie Locke; brothers, Winston "Winnie" Matheson, Gordon "Gully" Matheson, Kenneth Matheson; brother-in-law, Edward Graham. Letha loved her title of "Grammie Lee", and she celebrated her grandchildren, Betty Anne Bernard, Bible Hill; Zachary (Bobbi) Palmer, Greenfield; Gracie Wilson, Bible Hill; Jessica (Brian Gough), Hammonds Plains; Abby Miller, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Sam Miller, Cronulla, Australia. Her promotion to the level of "Great Grammie Lee" for Caige and Cadyn was a special one, and she was eagerly looking forward to Baby Gough, expected in July. The family would like to thank neighbor Shannon Baird, friend Sandi Ross, and Nancy Hatfield for their care and compassion in supporting Letha staying in her home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall \endash Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Letha's family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m., Sunday, April 13, 2025. A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m., Monday, April 14, 2025 at Knox United Church, 53 Highway 289, Brookfield. Private family interment in Brookfield Eastside Cemetery. Reception will follow in the church hall. If so desired, donations in Letha's memory to Knox United Church, Brookfield, United Church Camp Meeting Association (Berwick Camp) or Terry Fox Foundation are welcomed.
