He was embraced by family and surrounded in love as he passed. He was a son of Vivian (Lockhart) Bishop, Shannex, Greenwich; and the late Donald Floyd Bishop. Ray grew up in Cambridge and attended Central Kings High School where, in his last year, he met the love of his life, Donna. Ray loved to play sports and excelled at hockey and baseball with quick hands and speedy feet. He graduated from Acadia University with a Bachelor of Commerce and, in 1971, was admitted to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia having scored in the top of his class. He began his accounting career with Riddell Stead, and then ACA Co-op before transitioning to his own practice, known as Bishop & Company. Ray had a genuine interest in people's stories and how he could have a positive impact on their lives. By choice, Ray never retired. The next stage of his career involved a vision for building the family business into a legacy and a source of pride. With Home Hardware locations in Wolfville, Berwick, Canning, Kentville, Antigonish & Sherbrooke, Ray was respected and loved by those fortunate enough to cross paths with him. Ray was a quintessential family man and a gentleman. He and Donna built a beautiful life together and were partners in every sense of the word. They were their children and grandchildren's biggest supporters. Ray cherished and adored his grandchildren, never missing one of their events, and would travel near or far to see one. Ray stayed active his entire life and loved his squash and tennis buddies, as well as walking the trails with Donna. He jumped at any opportunity to play golf, tennis or squash with his grandchildren. He was the best of the best. Honest, kind and selfless in life and in business. He was a quiet leader and a man of faith, living out his faith by example. He was proud to act as the Treasurer for the Wolfville Area Inter-Church Council and was a member of the Port Williams Baptist Church. Ray meant a lot to many people, but to his family, he meant everything. He was an eternal optimist, always reminding us that there is sunshine and joy after rain. In addition to his mother, Ray is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Donna (Palmer); daughters, Jyl Bishop Veale (Brian Veale), Wolfville; and Leanne Bishop (Michael Mason), Los Angeles, CA; son, Andrew (Melissa) Bishop, Port Williams; beloved grandchildren, Olivia and Rachel Veale and Elliott, Lila and Emmett Bishop; brothers, Dwight (Patricia) and Gregory Bishop, both of Wolfville; sister, Kathryn Beanlands, Halifax; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Besides his father, Ray was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Brian Beanlands. Although Ray spent only two days in the Valley Hospice, the impact it had on his family was immeasurable. Donations in memory may be made to the Valley Hospice Foundation or a charity of your choice. An informal visitation will take place 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 20, 2024 in the White Family Funeral Home, immediately followed by the Celebration of Life Service 4:00 p.m. (with a livestream available).
